NTTU Faculty of Engineering and Technology promotes the application of AI in teaching

The Faculty of Engineering – Technology at Nguyen Tat Thanh University organized the seminar “Applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) to Innovating Teaching Methods and Learning Assessment” to enhance practical training conditions, aiming to help students access real-world professional experiences right from the university lectures to prepare themselves for integration into the new era.

The program contributes to promoting digital transformation in education, innovating teaching methods, and expanding corporate partnerships in training high-quality technical human resources.

Artificial Intelligence is creating powerful changes in teaching and learning activities, opening up numerous opportunities to improve training quality while posing new requirements for teaching methods, assessment, and learner capacity development. Based on this reality, the Faculty of Engineering – Technology organized the seminar to update trends, strengthen academic exchange, and build directions for effective and responsible AI applications in the higher education environment.

Attending the program, on behalf of the Board of Management of Nguyen Tat Thanh University, was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Hong – Vice President of the University.

On behalf of the corporate representatives were Mr. Vuong Ngoc Hoang – Director of East Sea Automation Technology Engineering Co., Ltd. (ESTEC); Ms. Vuong Thuy Duong – Deputy Director of Operations; and Ms. Ho Thi Le – Deputy Head of Human Resources and Administration.

On behalf of the Dean’s Board of the Faculty of Engineering – Technology were Dr. Le Van An – Dean; Dr. Duong Hoang Long – Vice Dean; and Dr. Tran Quang Huy – Vice Dean, along with all lecturers and staff of the Faculty of Engineering – Technology.

Delivering the opening remarks at the seminar, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Hong – Vice President of Nguyen Tat Thanh University emphasized that the rapid development of artificial intelligence is creating profound changes in higher education. In a context where AI can efficiently support the processing and synthesizing of information, the role of universities no longer stops at transmitting knowledge, but must focus on developing critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and lifelong learning capabilities for learners.

According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Hong, AI is not only a supporting tool but also a driving force pushing the innovation of teaching methods, examination, assessment, and educational models. In that context, higher education institutions need to proactively build appropriate AI application strategies, ensuring the promotion of technological effectiveness coupled with maintaining training quality and academic integrity.

AI: From a supporting tool to a requirement for mindset innovation in teaching

In the keynote report section, Dr. Duong Hoang Long – Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering – Technology shared an overview of the current status of AI applications in higher education, its impacts on lecturers and students, trends in teaching method innovation, practical implementation models within the Faculty, and proposed several solutions to optimize AI effectiveness in educational and scientific research activities.

According to a survey conducted in June 2026 involving 38 lecturers and 349 students, 97.4% of the Faculty’s students had used AI; among which ChatGPT accounted for 84.5% and Gemini accounted for 79.9%. In the lecturer group, 36.8% utilized AI daily, 84.2% used it weekly or more, and no lecturer responded with “never used AI.”

These figures indicate that AI has become an existing part of teaching and learning activities. The transition regarding accessibility has practically taken place; the remaining question is no longer “whether to use it or not,” but “how to use it” to align with educational goals, maintain academic standards, and promote learners’ capabilities.

Discussion results revealed that AI effectively supports learning and teaching activities through its capability to personalize content, enhance self-study, and assist in assessment. However, the utilization of AI also raises critical issues such as academic integrity, the risk of technology dependency, and the demand for innovating methods to evaluate students’ actual competence.

Faced with these shifts, the Faculty’s lecturing team has proactively adjusted assessment methods. Survey results indicated that 100% of the lecturers have changed their evaluation approaches, increasing oral exams, presentations, and open-ended case studies to better evaluate students’ critical thinking and knowledge application capacities.

A highlight of the seminar was the practical examples in engineering training. AI has been integrated into course modules such as Principles of Internal Combustion Engines, and Automotive Diagnostics and Repair Techniques to support students in analyzing, constructing workflows, and solving problems. However, learners must still verify information, cross-reference with specialized documentation, and defend their professional arguments.

The seminar also introduced the AI Declaration model, requiring students to clearly declare the AI tools used, the purpose of use, and the method of verifying results. Accompanying this is an assessment system emphasizing technical competence, critical thinking, traceability, and oral examinations to ensure transparency in learning.

Based on the survey results, the seminar identified three major challenges: a decline in self-study capability, difficulties in evaluating learning outcomes, and a lack of specific guidance policies. On this basis, the Faculty proposed applying the 3T principles: Transparency, Traceability, and Training, aiming to build an environment for responsible AI use.

In addition, the seminar proposed a three-tier implementation roadmap. At the lecturer level, it involves piloting AI within modules and evaluating actual effectiveness; at the Faculty/Department level, it focuses on updating training programs, enhancing practice, and sharing professional expertise; at the University level, it entails formulating AI policies, investing in infrastructure, and fostering AI capabilities for both lecturers and students.

Three overarching messages highlighted at the seminar included: AI is already present in classrooms and prohibition is not the solution; the benefits and risks of AI must be managed concurrently; and the role of lecturers is not lost but needs to adapt and innovate.

The sponsorship activity demonstrates the partnership of the enterprise in training high-quality technical human resources at Nguyen Tat Thanh University

Accordingly, ESTEC presented the Faculty with specialized equipment and software to serve teaching, practice, and research activities, with support from the solution provider EPLAN – one of the electrical engineering and automation design platforms widely applied in enterprises today. This sponsorship contributes to supplementing facilities, creating conditions for lecturers and students to approach technologies, software, and workflows currently applied in practical industrial manufacturing.

According to Mr. Vuong Ngoc Hoang, AI can assist learners in searching for information, analyzing data, generating ideas, and solving engineering problems. However, technology cannot fully replace human professional thinking, creative capability, and practical experience. Therefore, students should regard AI as a supporting tool instead of relying completely on results generated by AI.

The representative of ESTEC also emphasized that enterprises today do not merely evaluate candidates based on theoretical knowledge but also care about critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork capabilities, and technology adaptability. Therefore, it is highly necessary for educational institutions to proactively bring AI into teaching, while simultaneously innovating assessment methods towards emphasizing practical capacity and knowledge application.

Mr. Vuong Ngoc Hoang believed that close coordination between the university and enterprises will contribute to helping students gain early access to technology, practical workflows, and professional requirements of the labor market. This is also an important foundation for training high-quality human resources, meeting the demands of digital transformation and industrial development in the new phase.

Concluding the seminar, Dr. Le Van An – Dean of the Faculty of Engineering – Technology emphasized that the application of AI in education does not aim to replace the role of instructors, but is directed toward improving the efficiency of teaching, learning, and scientific research. The Faculty will continue to promote training activities, share experience, and construct a transparent and responsible AI application environment.

The seminar “Applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) to Innovating Teaching Methods and Learning Assessment” not only brought practical perspectives on AI in education but also contributed to promoting innovative mindsets among the lecturing staff. Simultaneously, the program continues to affirm the training orientation attached to digital transformation, strengthening corporate collaboration, and elevating the training quality of Nguyen Tat Thanh University in the new development phase.
