Students of the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Technology Enhance Enterprise Networking and Capacity Building

In the face of rapid advances in science and technology, digital transformation, and artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of medical laboratory technology, higher competency requirements are being placed on the sector’s workforce. Embracing this trend, the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Technology at Nguyen Tat Thanh University organized the workshop “Occupational Competency Analysis in Medical Laboratory Technology”, combined with the launching of the Corporate Club and the signing of cooperation agreements with 9 partners.

The program contributes to strengthening connections between the University and hospitals, enterprises, and professional organizations, while providing students with additional practical insights into post-graduation career requirements.

Linking Education with Practical Occupational Needs

In his opening speech, Dr. Nguyen Tuan Anh – Vice President of Nguyen Tat Thanh University, Director of NIIE Institute of International Education, emphasized the orientation of connecting higher education with the professional environment. Higher education should not only provide specialized knowledge but also focus on fostering professional competencies, practical skills, professional mindset, sense of responsibility, and lifelong learning capabilities for learners. Accordingly, expanding the partnership network with healthcare institutions, enterprises, and professional organizations plays a crucial role in updating training curricula, finalizing learning outcomes, and enhancing students’ ability to meet real-world demands upon graduation. The active participation of employers also provides the University with valuable reference points to gradually adapt educational content to the sector’s development.

From this orientation, the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Technology announced the Decision to establish the Corporate Club of the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Technology and introduced its Executive Board and members. This marks a new step forward in expanding cooperative relations between the faculty and hospitals, testing centers, enterprises, and professional entities. Through the club, all parties gain a regular networking space to exchange human resource needs, share professional experience, and expand cooperative activities in training, internships, recruitment, and professional development. The connection among University – Enterprise – Student is thereby expected to be increasingly strengthened, contributing to expanded opportunities for cooperation and supporting students in developing their career competencies.

Cooperation activities focus on improving training quality and developing a high-quality workforce of medical laboratory technologists to meet the recruitment and development needs of enterprises, the healthcare sector, and society. The participating parties also committed to strengthening connections among enterprises, students, and lecturers through seminars, panel discussions, field trips, and professional activities; while boosting cooperation in research, knowledge transfer, innovation, and sustainable development in the field of medical laboratory technology.

This expansion of the partner network by the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Technology at Nguyen Tat Thanh University opens up new opportunities for students to gain exposure to real-world working environments, while providing the University with additional valuable feedback from employers to update and refine its curriculum structure.

From Practical Requirements to Students’ Occupational Competencies

Beyond expanding the collaboration network, the event dedicated time to discussing practical requirements for medical laboratory technology personnel through the panel discussion “Occupational Competency Analysis in Medical Laboratory Technology”. The discussion featured guest speakers: MSc. Le Thi Thuy Nhu – Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City Center for Medical Testing Quality Control; MSc. Do Thi Thanh Dong – Chief Technologist of Thong Nhat Hospital; and MSc. Nguyen Thi Truc Anh – Founder of HANHPHUCLAB Medical Diagnostic Center, Vice President of HCMC Association of Medical Laboratory Technology.

Panelists participating in the discussion “Occupational Competency Analysis in Medical Laboratory Technology” share practical perspectives on competency requirements and career opportunities for students in this major

From the perspectives of three distinct working environments—laboratory quality management, hospital testing operations, and private clinic testing operations—the discussions focused on practical issues facing students before entering the job market. Questions and topics revolved around job positions and career opportunities for graduates holding a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology; requirements regarding professional knowledge, practical skills, and professional attitude; core competencies to prioritize before graduation; clinical internship experiences at hospitals; as well as the ability to adapt to working environments in private testing centers. Additionally, the speakers shared useful information with attending students on updating professional expertise, supplementing skill sets, and acquiring necessary certificates/credentials to enhance competitive capacity during job hunting.

These insights help students of Medical Laboratory Technology at Nguyen Tat Thanh University better visualize their career development paths after graduation, while identifying key competencies to proactively hone throughout their studies at the university.

Medical Laboratory Competency Requirements in the Era of Digital Transformation

In addition to current career requirements, the program addressed anticipated transformations in medical laboratory technology over the next 5–10 years. The rise of digital transformation, AI, automation, and the imperative to use foreign languages to access new specialized knowledge are creating noticeable shifts in laboratory technologists’ working environments.

In this context, students in this major require not only a solid theoretical foundation and hands-on practical skills, but also the initiative to enhance digital literacy, technological adaptability, an innovative mindset, and a commitment to lifelong learning. These factors also demand that educational institutions regularly update their training programs, enhance real-world experiences, and broaden connections with industry partners.

Through the workshop, the unveiling of the Corporate Club, and the signing of training cooperation agreements with partners, the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Technology at Nguyen Tat Thanh University continues to expand its collaborative ecosystem connecting regulatory bodies, hospitals, clinics, enterprises, and professional organizations. This serves as a foundation for the Faculty to continually adapt to labor market demands, elevate training quality, and accompany students in building competency, adapting to professional changes, and advancing their future careers.
